"The essence of neroli produced from the flower of the bitter orange tree, a lovely little white flower classified among the Hesperides, and whose scent resembles that of bergamot, owes its name, at the end of the 17th century, to Anne-Marie Orsini, Duchess of Bracciano and Princess of Nerola in Italy, known in France as the famous (and intriguing) Princess des Ursins who adored these white flowers whose floral and sweet scent filled her palace. Did she not initiate the taste for these citrus scents and fragrances, reminiscent of orange blossom after the rain, which later captivated Napoleon Bonaparte upon his return from the Italian campaign? Emperor Napoleon I would become an immoderate consumer of Eau de Cologne – created in Italy by Jean-Marie Farina, unless it was his predecessor Jean-Paul Feminis, a perfumer in Cologne - to which he attributed hygienic virtues, claiming it allowed him to stay fresh and alert throughout his active days…"
