This "antique" toile de Jouy features patterns particularly appreciated during the Empire, a period when designers were largely inspired by a fantasized Greco-Roman world. The excavations of the sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii with the first archaeologists, and the military campaigns of the young emperor have an undeniable influence.
The patterns consist of symbols of triumph, helmets, and laurel crowns, as well as allegorical figures of victory. On clean shapes, ornaments such as palmettes, draped figures, fauns, centaurs, and sphinxes unfold.
